Preston Park Track League Aug 4

Story posted August 6, 2010 | Report by Gavin Smith

Rain once more had the upper hand at Preston Park on 4 August, ensuring the second cancellation of the season. No fewer than 40 riders had turned up to the Brighton track, but the surface was still damp from the afternoon deluge and the commissaires had no option but to call the meeting off.

With just one meeting left in the season, the results of some leagues have become clearer. The senior A-league champion is now sure to be Felix English and his runner-up will be Brock Duncumb-Rogers. The battle for the final podium spot is sure to be well-fought next week, as Ashley Dennis has an oh-so-slender 4-point lead over last year’s champ Mark Burgess.

Sam Cheesman has already won the B-league, but the next two placings are still in the balance, with Jack Hoyle, Charlie Burrell and Nigel Burrows the leading contenders. Amy Jacobs leads the U16 league by just nine points from Jack Priddle, with Imogen Farlie in third place. The U14 category is even closer, Matthew Hill only six points in front of Jake Marley, with Kimberley English destined for third.

The U12 placings are almost set in stone, as Amy Smith is well ahead of her main rivals, Isaac Wright and Ben O’Brien. Noah Ridgway-Brown is the U10 champion, with Bethany Lewis and Stan Abbott-Stacey likely to place second and third. Meanwhile, Rahul Fortescue-Talwar is sure to be crowned the U8 winner, and the tussle for second spot will be between Ben Battle and Rory Burke.

All overall placings will be decided in the final meet on Wednesday 11 August, starting promptly at 6.45pm. And, as tradition dictates, as soon as the identity of all the various league champions is certain, they will all take part in a lap of honour to mark their achievements. Expect non-stop action, thrills, Preston Park’s legendary friendly atmosphere, top-class refreshments – and dry weather.
