Reading Track League Rd 9 (June 28)

Story posted July 5, 2010 | by Guy Swarbrick

Round 9 of the Reading Track League saw the focus shift from the endurance riders to the sprinters – or, at least, that was the theory. With endurance riders having dominated the sprint and keirin competitions so far, there was a good chance that the results would have a familiar look to them. Unusually, the opening 10 lap A-B scratch stayed together for the duration, finishing in a full bunch sprint. Bryan Taylor of VC Londres took the A series victory ahead of Neil Cooper and Matt Gittings – both of AW Cycles. In the Bs it was first year Under 16 George Withers of Palmer Park Velo who took the class win – and 5th overall – passing Trevor Bradbury of Reading CC and Richard Moss of GS Henley in the run-in.

It was Taylor again in the Devil, leading out the final sprint from Dave Sinclair of GWR Team with Ian Greenstreet of Newbury RC rolling home in third. In the B Devil it was youth that triumphed again, with Withers again taking the honours, this time ahead of Ian Black of Norwood Paragon and Under 16 team mate William Macke.

In a welcome reversal of recent trends, it was a sprinter that led out the Unknown Distance race. Six laps might not be a long way for the endurance boys, but it’s a hell of a long way for a sprinter and it was good to see John Williams of Team Terminator off the front. He couldn’t hold off Taylor, but he did cling on to finish second ahead of Greenstreet. Black went one better in the Unknown Distance to take the win in the Bs ahead of Mark Macleod and Withers.

Sinclair prevented Taylor from securing a clean sweep, taking the A Sprint final from Eddy Sobieralski of sports-coaching.com and sprint series leader Gittings, who took his third third of the evening. It was a sprinter who led home the Bs, with Paul Davidoff of Team Terminator taking the win from Moss and Frazier Carr of Palmer Park Velo.

The AW Cycles 20k saw the field lapped – first by English and Gittings and then by a larger group which included Greenstreet, Cooper, Sinclair and Abraham. With three to go, the riders on the lead lap came back together and after a dress rehearsal with two to go it was a mini-bunch sprint to the line won, by less than half a wheel, by Cooper from Sinclair. Abraham took third a couple of bike lengths back.  In the B series it was Carr who lead the field home, ahead of Bradbury Senior and Macke. Max Stedman of Reading CC was the first Under 14-Under 16 rider home in the Sonim Youth Endurance competition.

The Ladies events saw a welcome visit from former Palmer Park Velo rider Emily Barnes, recently recruited to the Rapha Condor Sharp squad. Barnes took the Unknown Distance, Sprint and 20k wins with Natalie Hill of Hillingdon Slipstreamers taking the 10 Lap Scratch and the Devil.
