Junior Track Worlds To Coming to Glasgow

News posted: 30 January 2010

Scotland is to host the 2013 UCI Junior Track Cycling World Championships at the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome , which is currently being built for the 2014 Commonwealth Games. The news was announced by the UCI at  the Cyclo-Cross World Championships in the Czech Republic.

The Championship will be the first major event to take place in the new Velodrome which is currently under construction in the Glasgow’s East End.

Paul Bush OBE, Chief Operating Officer at EventScotland, the national events agency which led the bid, said:

“Winning the Juniors Track Cycling World Championships is a fantastic achievement for Scotland and once again proves our world class credentials in hosting major sporting events.  As the first event confirmed for the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome, it will introduce Scotland’s newest sports facility to the world. This is the first step in a strategic approach, in partnership with Glasgow City Council, to attract and win events in commonwealth sports to utilise and showcase the city’s new and existing facilities. The Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome will be a unique facility and among the top venues for track cycling in Europe.  We anticipate that this will be the first of many track cycling events won for Scotland in the years leading up to and beyond the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.”

The Championships will see around 220 riders aged 19 and under take part from 60 countries across the world and the event boasts an estimated economic impact of £2.2 million.
