Brooks Cycles Track League

Round 8 of the Brooks Cycles Track League at Newcastle, Staffs saw a good turnout of riders contest a full series of events under sunny but chilly conditions at the Lyme Valley Stadium. The highlight of the night was the 500m Handicap competition with overall leader Joffie Houlton of Newcastle RC 2001 looking to hold on to his lead. Despite being pulled back 10 metres from two weeks ago, it looked as though he was still going to win. However his team mate Anthony Houlton just caught him on the line to take the victory from a mass of riders who were close behind. Joffie’s second place extended his overall lead and he looks a strong contender for the title this year.

The A Class races saw the return from University of two times overall winner Andrew Magnier from Planet X. Despite not racing on the track for two months, he won the Devil and placed second in the 10 lap and final 10 mile race. The most impressive rider of the night was Sam Lowe of Go Sport Spex RT who won the opening 10 lap Scratch event with a fine finishing sprint and better still, attacking with 6 laps to go in the ten mile event to finish half a lap ahead. Sam has been just out of the results over the past few weeks however it now appears he is starting to hit form and these victories show he can win either a sprint or from a lone break.

The B Class event saw one rider dominate the races. Joe Turner of Eastlands Velo scored 9 points with great victories in the Devil, Points and the final 10 mile scratch. Joe is now the overall leader of this league and on this form is going to take some stopping. The Youth races saw some exciting racing with the team sprint a close affair. Eight riders scored points with Alex Taylor of Eastlands Velo top scoring with 6 points which came from wins in the 200m time trial and a member of the Team Sprint winning team along with a second in the scratch race.

The Freewheelers League saw eighteen riders compete across the three groups with the top points scorers in the groups as follows;
