Varnish Makes Quarters in Cali Sprint & 5th in 500 TT

Track World Cup Classics - Round 3, Cali, Columbi, 10-12 December 2009

500m TT - Jess Varnish was fifth in the Women's 500m Time Trial on day two in Cali. She recorded a time of 35.215s, with the gold medal going to the in-form world record holder Simona Krupeckaite who completed the two laps in 33.786s.

Sprint: GB's Jess Varnish made a good start to her Sprint campaign at the Columbian round of the Track World Cup, with the seventh fastest qualifying time in the 200m Time Trial. She recorded 11.637s, just under half a second behind fastest rider, Willy Kanis of the Netherlands.

In the first round Jess then beat the Spaniard Helena Casa Roige. Inevitably, the quarter-finals brought tougher opposition, in the shape of Simona Krupeckaite, who was simply too fast for the young GB rider, beating her in both races. Krupeckaite is going to be off Jess's Christmas card list, having dumped her out of the sprint at the Manchester World Cup event as well.

In the 5th to 8th place final Jess was seventh. Meanwhile, in the final, Krupeckaite went on to beat Kanis in two straight rides to claim the gold.

Other News: Other news of note includes a double win for French sprinter, Michael D'Almedia who won the Kilo in a rapid 1:01.171 and then also took the Keirin. There was also a stand out ride by USA's Sarah Hammer - the former world champion recorded 3:27.514 in qualifying, on the way to the gold in the Women's Pursuit.
