Elinor Barker and Ellie Dickinson won a dramatic Madison gold for the Great Britain Cycling Team on the final day of 2017 UEC European Track Championships on Sunday.

Olympic champion Barker and Dickinson, making her debut at an elite European championships, won the final sprint for 10 points which saw them leapfrog Ireland for gold in Berlin.

Britain finished on 58 points, with Ireland in second on 50, and Netherlands third with 46.

Great Britain Cycling Team end the championships with four medals - three gold and one silver.

“Feeling pretty good,” Barker said. “I think we worked to our strengths in that I’m not feeling too fast at the moment but I thought I was fit enough to have quite an attacking race - so we worked really hard with that.

“Unfortunately we couldn’t get that second lap but managed to get enough sprints and enough time off the front that we picked up enough points.”

After winning her first elite European title, 19-year-old Dickinson said: “I’m really happy, especially to do it with Elinor. We did the Madison together in LA (at the track world cup) and that didn’t really go to plan so it was nice for it to go well today.”

Jack Carlin reached the semi-finals of the keirin but missed out on a top-three position needed to make the final. The Scot crossed the line fifth in his 7th-12th place final to take 11th overall.

Joe Truman exited in the round one repechages, the 20-year-old completing a busy programme of racing which had included the team sprint and kilo.

In the women’s sprint, Sophie Capewell was defeated at the 1/16 finals stage in a close-fought contest with Spain’s Helena Casas, ending a valuable week of senior experience for the 19-year-old.

Olympic bronze medallist Katy Marchant was unable to take to the line after her keirin crash on Saturday.

In the men’s Madison, Chris Latham and Ollie Wood finished in 13th with three points as France took gold.
