Great Britain Cycling Team’s Lauren Bate won silver in the sprint in the UCI Junior Track Cycling World Championships on day three of racing in Italy.

It’s Bate’s second medal of the week so far in Montichiari following her bronze medal in the team sprint on Wednesday night.

Bate went into the sprint semi-finals full of confidence following a dominant display in the opening rounds on Thursday and continued her fine form against Steffie van der Peet of the Netherlands.

The young British rider won both of her heats in style to book a place in the gold medal ride.

There, Bate came up against France’s Mathilde Gros and the competition’s two outstanding young sprinters went head-to-head.

Gros took the first heat after Bate attempted to go for a long one - the French rider having too much power.

The second heat was closer and Bate looked to have the advantage in the closing stages - but Gros blocked her with an illegal move before crossing the line first.

The commissaires relegated Gros - setting up a decider for the world title.

Bate gave everything in pursuit of the rainbow stripes, but Gros had the edge in the final to claim the gold medal - with the British rider adding to her impressive palmares with sprint silver.

The bronze medal went to Germany’s Lea Sophie Friedrich.

Earlier in the men’s sprint competition, both Lewis Stewart and Hamish Turnbull qualified for the match sprints and eased through their 1/16 matchups.

But the pair were both denied in the 1/8 finals - with Turnbull bravely getting back on his bike following a collision in his heat.
