Ones to watch

Sprint

Katy Marchant's late withdrawal through injury means new champions will be crowned in each of the four women's sprint categories at the 2017 championships.

The Olympic bronze medallist suffered a knee injury and will be unable to defend the sprint, keirin, time trial and team sprint titles she won in 2015.

Two-time Paralympic world champion pilot Rachel James and Brit Jackson will be the favourites, but Great Britain Cycling Team Senior Academy rider Sophie Capewell and her Junior Academy colleagues Lauren Bate-Lowe, Georgia Hilleard and Esme Niblett, will all be looking to win a first senior national champion's jersey.

Lewis Oliva will be looking to defend his sprint title from the 2015 championships and may well be eyeing up the keirin, following reigning champion Matt Crampton’s retirement from track cycling.

The men’s team sprint will see two-time world cup gold medallists Jack Carlin, Ryan Owens and Joe Truman line up for British Cycling North West Regional A hoping to pull on a a national champion’s jersey at their first senior championships.

They will face tough competition from Lewis Oliva, Ryan Hutchinson and Alex Joliffe who will be representing British Cycling North West Regional B.

Endurance

Great Britain’s most successful female Paralympian Dame Sarah Storey will be tough to beat in the individual and team endurance events, although rising stars Emily Kay, Danni Khan and Emily Nelson will be trying to do just that.

Katie Archibald has returned to training following the Madison crash at the Glasgow world cup that saw her break her wrist before going on to win the race with team mate Manon Lloyd.

The Olympic team pursuit champion will be eyeing the individual pursuit title, after winning gold in the same event at the European championships for the third consecutive year in October.

Matt Bostock will lead the hunt for the men’s titles, following a successful Six Day, European and world cup season in 2016 and 2017. His fellow Senior Academy riders Matt Walls, Angus Claxton and Joe Holt will also be looking to bag their first senior national titles, while Ethan Haytor and Joe Holt will hope to add more silverware to the collection, following their victory at the National Madison Championships last month.

Para-cycling

Many of the national champions from 2015 will be on track to defend their titles; Jody Cundy, Lora Fachie (née Turnham) and Sophie Thornhill all fresh from the Rio Games, are returning as Paralympic champions.

Their fellow gold medallists from Rio, Louis Rolfe and Megan Giglia, will also be in Manchester to challenge for titles, setting up a mouth-watering contest between Great Britain Cycling Team colleagues.

The venue

The National Cycling Centre was Britain's first indoor cycling track. It hosted track cycling events in the 2002 Commonwealth Games, the Revolution series and the UCI Track Cycling World Championships a record three times (1996, 2000 and 2008). More than 15 track cycling world records have been set on the 250m Siberian pine track that forms the national side’s training base in the UK.
