Britain’s Dame Sarah Storey missed out on the hour world record at the Lee Valley VeloPark but set a new British best in London with an amazing effort on Saturday.

The 11-time Paralympic champion took on Dutchwoman Leontien Zijlaard-van Moorsel's mark of 46.065km, which was set in 2003.

Storey had covered 45.502km by the time the hour was up.

"It was definitely the hardest hour of my life," Storey said.

"I came in here hoping to go further than 46km, but to break the British record, I'm really chuffed.

"It's not as far as Leontien but to miss out to her is no bad thing."

Storey began well but had slipped off the pace by the halfway mark and it proved too big a deficit despite a remarkable effort from the 37-year-old.

Storey also set a new Paralympian C5 best with her attempt.
