A group of young cyclists from across the country have been selected for an opportunity of a lifetime; riding the Tour de France.

The 26 young riders will experience what it is like to be an elite cyclist, when they ride the first and last 30km of the first, second and third stages of the Tour de France, as ‘Les Cadets Juniors’.

The young people have all progressed from Go-Ride, British Cycling’s entry-level development programme for young people. Aged between 16 and 19, they will now take centre stage on 5, 6 and 7 July, setting off along the route only a few hours before the elite riders.

John Mills, British Cycling’s director of coaching, education and development, said: “The organisers of the Tour de France, the ASO, have provided an incredible opportunity for aspiring young riders to experience what it is like to compete in one of the world’s greatest cycling events.

"The riders have all shown continued dedication to the sport and this is a fantastic and unique reward for their efforts.

“Over 60% of riders on the Great Britain Cycling Team started out at Go-Ride Clubs, so it’s possible we might even see our next Laura Trott or Chris Froome cross the finish lines.”

In celebration of the Tour de France visiting our shores, the Go-Ride programme is hosting a series of ‘come and try’ events to ensure a lasting legacy from the Grand Depart.

Go-Ride Clubs across the country will be holding over 200 entry-level events throughout the month of July, as part of the Go-Ride Tour. Open to any young people, the events provide an opportunity for riders who have been inspired by this summer’s cycling events to get involved with cycle sport.
