At the end of the first full season of racing in the region since 2019 the process for expressing an interest in promoting a cycle sport event in 2023 has now opened.

To date 10k riders haven taken part in 152 events across the region as the sport continues to return to pre pandemic levels of activities.

The sport continues to face challenges with the economic climate we all face in our lives and as such the region will be looking to create a calendar of events that will provide value for money for both organisers and riders for the coming year.

Data gathered from the region during the last 12 months has enabled us to determine what the needs of the region and racing members require from a season and further details of this can be found below.

Data to be reviewed in Spring 2023

Whilst the aim is to firstly return to pre pandemic levels and then to grow the sport further assistance is still required not only in the number of racers and events but also the pool of volunteers through roles such as accredited marshals, Commissaries and National Escort Group riders. To safeguard our existing team of event officials against burn out and to support the expected growth of the sport in the coming years there is now the need to create a more strategic calendar and the associated volunteer training opportunities all necessary to help make your event a success.

With this in mind we have opened the processes for running a sanctioned event in 2023 by using an expression of interest form which will allow us to map the year ahead and suggest/ make changes to the calendar that we hope will allow us to:

  • Eliminate clashes in the calendar
  • Manage the use & oversaturation of specific venues/ routes
  • Increase promotion of events taking place in the region
  • Avoid condensed race seasons
  • Deliver training courses for volunteers in the areas where they are required
  • Avoid volunteer burnout
  • Recruit and develop Race officials and trainees through a clearer defined calendar
  • Enable racers and volunteers to map out the season ahead early on
  • Where applicable look at what additional support may be required to help and mentor new organisers/ events as well as what equipment the region could support with

If you or your group are looking to host an event from Sportive to BMX race and everything in-between, we need you to complete the short form found below. If your idea is still in the early stages and you don’t yet feel ready to complete the form please contact our Cycle Sport Developer, Dan Coast to arrange a call to support & develop your idea.

The form will remain open until the 30th November 2022 and must be submitted if you are thinking about running an event in 2022. The regions race workgroups will then meet in December to confirm the calendar and all organisers will be contacted advising them of the decision on their event, Organisers must then register the event on the British Cycling system by December 31st 2022 in order for publication of the 2023 Season calendar shortly after the Christmas break.
