Mental Health Awareness Week: Finding new passions in lockdown

As part of the Scottish Cycling Mental Health Awareness Week we've been hearing about the various ways our members and staff team have supported their wellbeing. Today we hear how Christie and Lucinda took up new hoddies in lockdown.

Christie finds joy on two wheels

Scottish Cycling Performance Coordinator Christie Pollock tried cycling for the first time since childhood and discovered the power of the bike.
"Before lockdown, I hadn't truthfully rode a bike since I was about 13 (except for once around Millport!). But working with such a talented programme of athletes was really inspiring, so I decided April 2020 would be the perfect time for me to give it a bash and see why people loved it so much. I had also moved house that month away from family, so it was a great way for me to learn the area by getting out exploring the lanes and bike paths in to surrounding villages."

"For me, cycling has become a great time to take my mind away from the stress and strains of normal life at the moment."

"You can't think about anything apart from what you are doing on the bike, and that's really peaceful. It's also the only time I don't have music or Teams meetings or phone calls in my ear. I hope it's something I can continue doing even when we are back working in offices or on the go."

Lucinda bakes away her troubles

Lucinda Beresford can normally be found clocking up miles on her bike but throughout lockdown has found solace in baking for her loved ones.

"With all races cancelled and no training goals, I struggled to find purpose. My granny was a great baker and used it to bring her community together. I took inspiration from her and started baking for friends and family. Birthday cakes for those celebrating in lockdown, Easter cupcakes and cookies just because it’s the weekend. I found the physical activity and sensations when baking very grounding when I was feeling overwhelmed. Taking basic ingredients and creating something delicious and beautiful is very satisfying. My friends and family were happy to receive the treats as well!”
