It has been an incredible summer of racing in Scotland which saw National Records falling on both the road and the track.
With records held by powerhouses such as Katie Archibald, Jonny Wale and Jack Carlin the fact that we are seeing records fall is testament to the ever improving standard of performance within Scotland. In particular the number of fast times set by youth and junior riders has been incredible, highlighting the success of youth development and progression within the sport.
Catriona MacGillivray (RT23) is one rider who has broken five of the 17 records which have fallen so far this year. MacGillivray has stood on every Scottish National Time Trial Championship podium this year, taking the win in the 25, 50 and the 100 mile TT’s. An astounding achievement!
Speaking after her 100 mile TT effort in which she shaved an incredible 17 minutes and 3 seconds off the record she said: “It was hard, but I did a better time out there than I expected, so I’m delighted with that. If you get a good time on the day you soon forget how hard it was. The 100 miles was always on the to do list so today was my first attempt”. Her time of 4:00:53 looks set to stand for some time.
Junior Alfie George is another rider who has delivered exceptional results in 2019. George broke the Scottish National junior men’s individual pursuit record at the Youth and Junior Track Championships in Newport earlier this year in a time of 1:04.5. Speaking about his achievement he said, "It always seemed so hard the past couple of years, but this year it just seemed to happen!".
Scottish Cycling National Events Manager Suzanne Burns is thrilled to see such great perforamnces in 2019 and credits the standard of events been run by our volunteers.
She said, "Its great to see so many records broken in 2019. What a fantastic year of accomplishments so far from Scottish Riders. The level of performance is clearly improving and I can not wait to see what records will be broke in 2020. The event environments that event organisers and officials are creating are allowing riders to push themselves within the races. Every detail that goes into planning and delivering an event has a massive impact on the success of the event and allows riders to be successful."
All Scottish National Championship winners, including those who set new Scottish Records will be celebrated at the Scottish Cycling Roll of Honour and Awards Ceremony on Saturday 7th March 2019.
