Pfeiffer Georgi produced another solid showing at the UCI Junior Track World Championships as she and Anna Docherty secured a fifth-place finish in the women’s Madison.

They were the strongest of the rest of the field as the top four sides, France, Russia, Australia and Italy, all bagged an extra lap as they dominated the contest between them.

Despite Great Britain not adding to their overall medal tally of two, there were encouraging signs from both the young male and female riders from the UK as the five-day event in Aigle, Switzerland, drew to a close.
Ella Barnwell had earlier put in a spirited display as she sealed ninth in the women’s keirin with third in the 7-12 final.

Later in the day, Ethan Vernon and Max Rushby battled to 13th in the men’s Madison – the final event of the competition – as Australia continued their excellent day by taking the title thanks to the efforts of Lucas Plapp and Blake Quick.

The competition threw up moments of supreme quality from Britain’s young riders, with Vernon’s individual pursuit silver earlier in the week a definite highlight.

Welsh rider Vernon, who represented his country at the Commonwealth Games earlier this year, just missed out on gold despite a valiant effort in the final – Russia’s Lev Gonov’s powerful ride ensuring he leaves Switzerland with the gold medal in his pocket.

The women’s team pursuit, source of many a medal in recent times in major competition for Britain’s riders, continued this trend with a bronze.

The British quartet of Georgi, Ellie Russell, Barnwell and Elynor Backstedt outgunned their Australian counterparts to seal the final place on the podium, with Italy defeating New Zealand in the gold medal race.

Barnwell was consistent throughout the week, crossing the line sixth in the individual pursuit and seventh in the scratch.

Backstedt was two places behind Barnwell in the individual pursuit, while Lusia Steele clocked 13th in the sprint and 14th in the 500m time trial.

Rushby was ninth in Friday’s men’s points race on Friday, with Charlie Calvert crossing in the same position in the scratch race the previous day. Alistair Fielding was the best Brit in the men’s sprint as he finished 11th.
