Alfie George couldn’t help but pinch himself after he dined out on success at the fifth Junior CiCLE Classic in Melton Mowbray.
The Spokes Racing Team rider got by with a little help from his teammates, with Dylan Hughes offering able support late on as he saw off the challenge of Lewis Askey to claim a British Cycling | Junior Road Series victory.
“It’s definitely the best race I’ve won. I’m not sure how I’m going to come down from this. It’s absolutely amazing,” said George.
“It was a really good race – no problems and it went to plan.
“I set my wheels up tubeless, 28mm tyres and 85psi, which meant I just rode over everything, which made
“I struggled at times but Dylan did a great job for me and I still had the legs at the end. It was nice to do it with him”
George and Askey, plus his teammate Hughes, led the way in the closing stages after breaking away from the main group as they headed into the final sector in Melton Mowbray town centre.
But it was George who had the stronger legs in the final 250 metres, with Hughes turning the screw on Askey by attacking repeatedly.
That finally paid off as George sprinted through to take his biggest win to date.

This round of the British Cycling | Junior Road Series saw the riders tackle 105 km of major roads, B roads, and off-road tracks, also including the notorious Somerberg and the Manorberg sections.
The first major move of the day saw a breakaway group of 16, Lewis Askey, take the initiative on one of the first climbs of the race and pull away from the main pack of riders.
Several attacks followed and the gaps were soon closed but it was on the second passing over Somerberg, where Askey, of Team Backstedt/Hotchillee, again chanced his arm as the field stretched out.
By the time the leading three hit the finishing straight, they had a clear gap from the chasing pack.
Askey led out but George used his fresher legs to pass him in the final metres to take the win.
