The academy will lead on from the existing Youth and Junior programmes, to continue developing and working with the riders to further prepare and support them for the world of professional cycling.
The new academy, titled ‘Wales Racing Academy’ will be run by former professional rider Rob Partridge.
Darren Tudor, Head Coach at Welsh Cycling said “Introducing the Wales racing academy is the next step towards completing the performance pathway for Welsh cycling.
"Historically we have encouraged and supported athletes into uci continental teams, but with our Youth and Junior programmes developing more and more young bike riders, we felt now was the right time to introduce this programme at under 23 level.
"The aim is to develop the athletes so that they progress onto higher level teams well prepared; and to ensure that the transition is made easier through a good coaching, racing and education programme, discipline and support.
"With experience of previously running a Women's academy, we can call on making sure riders not only develop; but succeed across disciplines.
"The timing of this programme is crucial as we go into another 4 year cycle towards the next Commonwealth games, and we continue to develop and support riders into programmes that may give them the best opportunity.
"The academy is a great opportunity for younger riders, who will see it as something that they really aspire to be part of.
"Rob brings a lot of experience to this role and will look to really increase the time spent with this important age category, also working with the junior programme making sure this is delivering the right coaching and racing programme, so each year they join the racing academy with more tools in their bag.
"We are very lucky to secure some great sponsors and partners for the programme who will be introduced in the near future and without them very difficult to run such a programme."
Rob Patridge added:“It’s great to be joining the Welsh Cycling team from the coaching side, especially at such an exciting time with this new project.
“The academy will be a brilliant learning opportunity for riders and I look forward to kick starting an intensive year of both training and racing, working with them to achieve their full potential”
The academy riders will be supported with a tailored training and race programme within the UK and Europe with access to both Wales National Velodrome in Newport and Sport Wales training facilities.
The riders will also be educated on other essential skills which will help them progress into becoming a full time athlete, such as nutrition and team work. “
The official academy kit which will be revealed in April, has been provided by cycling apparel brand PRIMAL Europe.
The academy are currently in preparations to compete in the Chorley Grand Prix 2018 on Sunday 15 April, the opening round of the 2018 British Cycling Elite Road Series.
