Could cycling help the people who connect with your organisation?

The benefits of recreational cycling are well reported, with improvements seen in people’s mental and physical well-being after just a short period of time in the saddle. Long-term benefits of physical activity include a reduction in risk of non-communicable disease and a lower incidence of absenteeism due to health.

The provision of outdoor physical activity opportunities by an organisation or group has the potential to bring great health and wellbeing benefits to participants, as well as helping to create a strong team ethos and improving communication within staff groups.

The recent increase in ‘Social Cycling’ groups across Wales has helped to provide thousands of accessible opportunities for service users, employees and the general public. Not only have these led to improvements in health for participants, they have also helped to build social confidence and develop new practical skills.

In order to help support those who see value in cycling, Welsh Cycling has developed a range of tools to help you start hosting rides within your organisation. Face to face sessions will consist of a half-day 'coffee morning' style workshop with supporting online materials, there will also be the option of undertaking a full day, Level 1 - Ride Leader Training course from our colleagues at British Cycling, providing you with all the information you should need to get your organisation riding.

Sessions will cover:

  • An overview of social cycling and its benefits to the community and individual
  • Reducing the barriers to cycling participation
  • Route planning tips
  • Marketing and promotion techniques
  • An overview of the participation programs
  • Top tips whilst out on your bike

By the end of the sessions, you should be confident in the benefits, creation, maintenance and promotion of a social cycling group. We will talk you through the entire process and support you in the creation of your first ride or ride series. You will also have the tools to be able to advise colleagues and service users in best practices whilst commuting and route planning.

Social Cycling workshops will be available free of charge to organisations or members of the public living or working in Wales, courses will take place in various locations on a number of occasions throughout 2018 (Dates and Locations to be confirmed).
