British Cycling has confirmed the nine riders who will represent Great Britain at the UEC Cyclo-cross European Championships taking place in Tabor, Czech Republic on 5 November.

Reigning junior European champion Tom Pidcock will contest the under-23 men’s event. Pidcock, who is also the junior cyclo-cross world champion, began his debut under-23 world cup campaign with a victory in Koksijde last week.

British Cycling’s Lewis Askey and Sean Flynn, who are on the junior men’s endurance academy and mountain bike development squad respectively, will line up along with Ben Tulett in the junior men’s race.

In the elite women’s category, the 2012 and 2013 European champion Helen Wyman will represent the Great Britain Cycling Team, as will Nikki Brammeier and Hannah Payton.

Anna Kay will compete in the under-23 women’s event along with 16 year old Harriet Harnden, who steps up a category in the absence of a junior women’s event.

Matt Ellis, British Cycling’s cyclo-cross co-ordinator, said: “The riders within the squad we are taking to Tabor have a wide range of experience levels when it comes to international competition.

“All three of the elite women riders have a lot of international race experience between them, with both Helen and Nikki enjoying podium results at previous editions of the European championships.

“Helen took the victory at the Nacht van Woerden event last Tuesday against an international field and will be looking to carry this momentum into the weekend.

“Tom is on great form at the moment, and he’s demonstrated this consistently throughout the year in both the cyclo-cross and road disciplines, so he will be a marked man in this race with a lot of expectation on his shoulders. This course suits Tom’s riding attributes, so it will be good to see how he manages the pressure and will be a valuable learning experience for him.

“The younger riders within the squad have limited international experience, so it’ll be interesting to see how they get on against their European competitors. It presents a good opportunity for them to identify areas they need to work on in order to be competitive at this level of racing.

“Tabor is typically a rolling course with constant but gentle climbs which add up to make a gruelling and selective race. This suits strong riders so I think we have the potential to do well at this year’s European championships.”
