The Great Britain Cycling Team will be in action in Germany for the 2017 UEC European Track Championships.
Berlin plays host to the first major international track cycling competition of the season from 18-22 October with European titles up for grabs.
The team
18 British riders will travel to the German capital with double European champion Katie Archibald looking to defend her two titles won in Paris last year.
The omnium world champion won European honours in that event twelve months ago, as well as taking the individual pursuit crown and silver in the elimination race and will look to repeat the sensational form in Germany that saw her dominate the recent Dudenhofen Grand Prix.
Fellow world champion Elinor Barker will also be in action in Berlin - the winner of the scratch race at the world championships took silver in the same event at last year’s European championships.
Joining the Olympic and world champions in the women’s endurance team are Eleanor Dickinson, Emily Kay and Manon Lloyd - all three of whom won gold at world cup level last season.
In the men’s endurance team, Olympic champion Steven Burke will compete in Germany alongside Andy Tennant, Kian Emadi, Chris Latham, Mark Stewart and Ollie Wood.
Burke, Emadi, Stewart and Wood were part of the British team pursuit squad that won bronze at last year’s European championships and are joined by four-time European champion Tennant and Latham, who won bronze in the elimination race at the 2015 European championships in Grenchen, Switzerland.
Sophie Capewell makes her elite debut for the Great Britain Cycling Team, racing alongside Katy Marchant in the team sprint.
Capewell sensationally raced the opening laps of the team pursuit for the Great Britain Cycling Team at the UEC Junior and Under-23 Track European Championships in Portugal earlier this summer, following an injury to Emily Nelson - but will be on more familiar ground in the team sprint, with her senior teammate Marchant tackling the individual events.
A five-strong British men’s sprint squad will compete in Germany, with Olympic champions Phil Hindes and Callum Skinner joined by 2016 European team sprint silver medallists Jack Carlin, Ryan Owens and Joe Truman.
The venue
Berlin is both the capital and the largest city in Germany with a population of approximately 3.7 million.
The Velodrom, based in Prenzlauer Berg, a popular locality in the Pankow district, was opened in 1997 and is part of a larger complex that also includes a swimming pool, built as part of the unsuccessful bid to host the 2000 Olympic Games.
The arena, which has Europe’s largest steel roof at a diameter of 142 metres, will also host the 2020 UCI Track Cycling World Championships.
The 250m track is made of Siberian Spruce with a bend inclination of 43.8 degrees.
