Dylan Groenewegen denied Caleb Ewan a fourth stage victory in Cheltenham on stage seven of the 2017 OVO Energy Tour of Britain.

The Lotto Jumbo sprinter edged out his Orica Scott rival after a tough day out on the roads as the peloton were tested by a series of hard working breakaways that never quite managed to go the distance.

World champion time triallist Tony Martin attempted a solo attack with 35km left to race but he was not allowed to escape and the stage, once again, came down to a sprint finish.

Groenewegen’s team mate, general classification leader, Lars Boom retained the green jersey with just one stage left to ride.

Jacob Scott, the King of the Mountains jersey wearer with one stage remaining, was involved in the first serious breakaway of the day, which saw him solidify his lead in the climbers’ category.

“It was a hard start today, within the competition for points and king of the mountains, a lot of people were watching each other,” he said.

“I thought I was going to have a day sat in the peloton and then Lukasz Owsian (CCC) jumped onto the break and i had to follow. I knew I was a faster sprinter than him and I picked up the points so it wasn’t such a bad day out! The last 30km were hard work though!”

The 2017 Tour of Britain finishes in Cardiff tomorrow with everything still to play for in the general classification race.
