Great Britain Cycling Team’s Craig Collis-McCann finished sixth in the T2 time trial on the opening day of the UCI Para-cycling Road World Championships.

The British rider produced a strong performance on his debut at this level, crossing the line in South Africa in 29:56.86.

Collis-McCann overcame blustery conditions on the outskirts of Pietermaritzburg on a course that featured a punishing climb at the conclusion of each lap.

Despite the challenging course, Collis-McCann finished strongly, improving on seventh at the halfway mark to stop the clock under the 30-minute mark.

Gold went to Germany's Hans-Peter Durst in a time of 27:41.14, with USA's Ryan Boyle 16 seconds back for silver.

New Zealand's Stephen Hills took bronze, a further 1:23 behind Boyle.

Collis-McCann is back in action in his road race on Saturday and he is confident he can compete for a place on the podium.

"It was pretty tough conditions out there today. It was hotter than we were expecting, very dry and into a strong headwind and the course wasn’t necessarily one that suited me.

"I’m not taking anything for granted but I’m feeling confident ahead of my road race on Saturday.

"I rode the course yesterday and it suits my style of riding and I’ve had some good results so far this year. I want to be in the mix for a medal."

The remaining eight members of the Great Britain Cycling Team in South Africa will get their championships underway on Friday with the second day of time trials.
