Vernon completes hat-trick at British Cycling National Youth and Junior Track Championships

Ethan Vernon completed a hat-trick of gold medals with superb wins in the junior men’s kilo and points race at the 2017 British Cycling National Youth and Junior Track Championships on Thursday.

Vernon set a time of 1.02.320 to take the kilo title, as a win in the final sprint of the points race saw him win two titles on the fourth day on the championships.

Rhys Britton was second in 1.02.956 with Harvey McNaughton taking bronze with a time of 1.05.125.

Under-16 male

Alex Haines and Lewis Asked were crowned under-16 male Madison champions, collecting 32 points on their way to victory.

The pair scored in all but one of the sprints as Oliver Reed and Samuel Watson were second on 24 points.

Alfred George and Leo Hayter scored 10 points to secure bronze.  

Discovery Junior CC’s Alfred George took the under-16 male 500m time trial, stopping the clock in 33.790 seconds.

George finished ahead of Daniel Cooper, who recorded a time of 34.309 for silver, and James Bunting, whose time of 34.384 was enough for bronze.

Under-16 female

Ella Barnwell won gold in the under-16 female 500m time trial, narrowly beating Aleshia Mellor. Barnwell set a time of 37.455, with Mellor taking silver in 37.668 and  Emma Finucane bronze in 37.878.

Elynor Backstedt and Zoe Backstedt powered to the under-16 female Madison title with a dominant 90 points.

The duo were well clear of Josie Griffin and Sophie Lewis in second place, as they won silver on 38 points, ahead of Amy Monkhouse and Elena Smith thanks to winning the final sprint.

Junior para-cycling

Matthew Robertson collected his second and third titles respectively with wins in 200m flying start time trial and 1000m standing start time trial respectively.

Finlay Graham was second in both events while Krispin Gardiner was third.
