Laura Massey kept her nerve to claim a stage victory in the seventh round of the HSBC UK | National Women’s Road Series race on Sunday.

Drops Cycling’s Massey finished third on the first day of competition at the Alexandra Tour of the Reservoir on Saturday and followed that up with another fine victory 24 hours later, clocking in with a time of 2:50:14 by the spectacular Derwent Reservoir.

Team Breeze’s Melissa Lowther, who won the first stage, also enjoyed a successful weekend as she recorded a second-placed finish on Sunday to take a round win.

Storey Racing’s Elizabeth Banks, who was third, tops the overall series standings after round seven, with Massey second and Lowther third.

Early throes

Halfway through the first lap, Lowther found herself in the thick of the peloton as Ellen McDermott and Rebecca Johnson began to pull away.

Aspire Bicycles/HSS rider Johnson would soon carve out a 20-second advantage and she managed to remain the lone leader as the competitors progressed up the climb during the first gruelling loop of the Derwent.

Eventually though, Johnson would end up with some company as a group of 10 riders broke away from the peloton, enjoying a buffer of one minute and 53 seconds.

The leading group

In the mix were the likes of Team WNT’s Hayley Simmonds and Drops Cycling’s Massey, who were second and third respectively on day one, as well as Natalie Grinczer, who also rides for WNT and was fifth.

Drops’ Hannah Payton, who finished sixth on Saturday, also found herself in with a shout.

However, Chanel Mason and her Storey Racing colleague Banks, and Saturday’s stage winner Lowther, came back into contention as the race neared its conclusion.

In the end, Massey came out on top as she crossed the line first, with Lowther, who finished second, capping off a successful two-day campaign while Banks was third.
