The Welsh Mountain Bike Cross Country Series kicks off the Aberystwyth Cycle Festival on Sunday, promoted by Ystwyth Juniors in Allt Ddel Woods.

The third round moves on to Allt Ddel Woods, Penrhyncoch ahead of the Welsh Cycling Mountain Bike Cross Country Championships at the Royal Welsh Showground in June.

The Venue

Allt Ddel Woods sits on the outskirts of Aberystwyth, and was used as a round of the Welsh Cycling Mountain Bike Cross Country Series for the first time in 2016.

The previous course has been given a facelift for the 2017 series, and has been adapted for each category, maximising the fun for every competitor. Freshly cut single track lies ahead for riders on Sunday, the senior course has been extended to 4.5km loop through the woods, with a short section of fire road.

The west coast of Wales is a magnet for sunshine, and racing could heat up on Sunday with series points up for grabs.

The competition

Youth boys’ Scott Williams, Marsh Tracks RT, will be looking to build on his success at the first two rounds of the series, in search of a third win in Aberystwyth. Similarly, Junior Katie Hesden, Coed y Brenin Dragons, will want to continue her winning streak in Allt Ddel.

The Elite field will be open for entries on the day, where Mel Alexander, Cardiff JIF, and Sophie Halhead, BW Cycling have scored wins so far. Steven James, Hope Factory Racing, took the first win of the series in Afan Park, will he return to the podium on Sunday?
