The squad

A seven-strong Great Britain Cycling Team squad has been named for the first round of the 2017 UCI Para-cycling Road World Cup in Italy.

Double Paralympic champions Steve Bate and Adam Duggleby reunite in Maniago as the pair make their return to the road.

The duo won gold in the individual pursuit on the track in Rio before switching to the road, where they claimed the tandem time trial title and bronze in the road race.

They previously enjoyed success at the world cup in Maniago in 2015 winning a bronze medal in the time-trial and a silver medal in the road race.

Also selected is Crystal Lane, who made the most of her late call-up to the Paralympic Games winning two medals in Brazil. She took silver in the individual pursuit in the velodrome before battling to bronze in the road race, coming out on top in a thrilling sprint finish for third.

A bronze medallist in the road race at the 2011 UCI Road World Championships, this will be Lane’s first road world cup since 2012.

Simon Price will be in action in British colours once more, keen to follow up on his time-trial bronze medals at the 2016 road world cup rounds in Ostend and Bilbao and will also be joined by Craig McCann and Liz Saul.

Will Bjergfelt will be making his debut for the Great Britain Cycling Team.

Bjergfelt competed at the Ostend world cup in 2016 as an independent rider, breaking his collarbone in the C5 time trial but still returned to complete the road race two days later.

He finished fourth in the individual pursuit at the HSBC UK | National Track Championships in January and has competed in this season’s HSBC UK | Spring Cup Series for Neon Velo.

The courses

Maniago is a town in the province of Pordenone in north-eastern Italy, around 70 miles from Venice.

The town, which has a population of around 12,000, is best known for its production of steel blades used to make knives, scissors and shears.

Races in Maniago will begin in the centre of the town, with the Piazza Italia playing host to the finishes in both the time trials and road races.

The time trial course heads south of the town and features some small climbs over either an 11.4km or 24km loop, subject to classification.

The road races take place on a 7.3km loop that heads north from Maniago, before turning south towards Molina di Campagna and circling back towards the Piazza Italia. Subject to classification categories, these races range from three laps of the loop (a total of 21.3km for women’s H1 riders) to a total distance of 106.5km for male tandem riders over 15 laps of the course.
