Rounds three and four of the 2017 HSBC UK | BMX National Series sees racing head to Birmingham Bike Park this weekend.
The BMX National Series brings Britain’s best BMX riders together over six weekends - and 12 rounds of racing - from March to August.
Manchester’s HSBC UK National Cycling Centre played host to the opening two rounds in March as riders made an early effort to get points on the board in the battle for overall honours.
How the series works
Riders are rewarded points based on their results in each round (up to maximum of 100 points per round). A rider’s best seven results from the series makes up their total. The rider with the highest total in their respective category is crowned BMX National Series champion.
Superclass
Kye Whyte stole the show in the superclass racing - the leading category for men - in Manchester.
Two wins over two days have given Peckham Challengers BMX Club’s Whyte an early lead but at the time of writing, Whyte is not set to start as he prepares for rounds three and four of the UEC BMX European Cup in the Netherlands on 29-30 April.
Whyte’s absence would leave the door open for Preston Pirates BMX Club’s Ross Cullen to leap to the top of the standings - though Runnymede Rockets’ Billy Luckhurst, and Cullen’s club mate Euan Hunt, can also seize the chance to climb the rankings.
Paddy Sharrock will hope to gatecrash the podium and in the process get himself off the mark in the standings, as will 2016 series champion Curtis Manaton.
Championship women
Like Whyte in the superclass, Peckham Challengers BMX Club’s Blaine Ridge-Davis enjoyed a perfect opening weekend at rounds one and two to sit top of the rankings.
But she is not set to take to the starting gate at Perry Park.
Charlotte Green was second behind Ridge-Davis in both finals in Manchester and the Cornwall BMX Racing Club rider will want to continue her good form in Birmingham.
2016 series champion Bethany Shriever endured a mixed opening weekend that left her in fourth overall, but the talented 18-year-old triumphed in both junior women’s rounds at the UEC BMX European Cup in Zolder to get back to winning ways.
Venue
Part of the legacy from the 2012 UCI BMX World Championships, Birmingham Bike Park has gone on to host BMX National Series rounds and the British Cycling National BMX Championships.
