Matt Simmonds and Manon Carpenter picked up the wins in the fourth round of the British Cycling MTB Downhill Series in Moelfre, Wales.

On a day where conditions changed dramatically for the worse, Carpenter and Simmonds showed their class on the open Welsh hillside.

The natural track is fast flowing, well known for its big jumps and the weather held off for the majority of the morning on Sunday before rain fell for elite seeding runs, significantly altering riders’ expectations for the weekend.

With world champion Rachel Atherton absent and Katy Kurd and Tahnee Seagrave recovering from injury, there was a depleted field in the elite women’s race, but Madison Saracen Factory Team rider Manon Carpenter showed her class.

She took to the course in some of the more favourable conditions of the day, and produced a winning time of 3:05.811 – almost twelve seconds clear of her nearest rival Ellie Maxfield, with Lucy Drees back in third.

In the men’s elite race, the rain came down harder than before, but Matthew Simmonds made it double cause for celebration for Madison Saracen by picking up the win in 2:36.581, pipping One Vision Global Racing’s Jack Reading to the win by less than a second. Matt Studdard took third.

The competition remains in Wales for round five, with Powys playing host to racing on 27-28 August.
