British Cycling president, Bob Howden, today received his OBE from HRH The Princess Royal at an investiture at Buckingham Palace.

Howden was awarded an OBE in the New Year’s Honours list after decades of dedicated service to the sport.

The honour comes in the third year of his presidency and after a volunteering career which started over 40 years ago and progressed to race organising, regional committees and a place on the British Cycling board.

After the investiture, he said:

“It’s been a memorable day at Buckingham Palace for me and my wife Ceri and it was great to be presented with my OBE by the Princess Royal who herself has done so much for British Olympic sport.

“Standing in line I found myself mulling over what the Princess would have to say to me, and when the conversation started on the subject of volunteers I was glad that I could explain the superb work that our volunteers do to keep the wheels of British Cycling moving, and how proud I was to represent them in receiving this award.

“Throughout my career in cycling I’ve been privileged to have worked within and across teams of people, whether volunteers or staff, who simply ‘get’ cycling. Today, British Cycling stands as an example to all of the success that comes from dedication and commitment as we encourage more and more people to get cycling.”

Two-time Tour de France winner Chris Froome was also awarded an OBE in the New Year’s Honours list, and was officially presented with his honour by the HRH Duke of Cambridge in May.
