British Cycling has today announced that Ed Clancy has withdrawn from the squad for the next round of the UCI Track Cycling World Cup in New Zealand.

The two-time Olympic gold medallist previously missed the European Track Championships and the first round of the 2015/16 series after suffering a slipped disc in training.

He will undergo surgery next week.

Clancy has been replaced in the squad for New Zealand by Senior Academy rider Joe Holt.

Joe Holt will replace Ed Clancy in the Great Britain sqaud for the UCI Track Cycling World Cup

British Cycling technical director, Shane Sutton, said: “Ed has been struggling with his back and he needs the operation.

“Someone of Ed’s calibre is obviously a big loss to the squad but we believe we have the riders capable of stepping up in his absence, allowing him to focus on his surgery and rehabilitation.

“Joe Holt is a talented young rider and the experience of travelling to New Zealand and competing at that level will stand him in good stead going forward.”
