Britain’s Owain Doull and Alex Peters impressed as Etixx-Quick Step's Matteo Trentin won stage six of the Tour of Britain in Nottingham.

Trentin, who spent the stage in the day’s breakaway, was too strong for MTN-Qhubeka’s Edvald Boasson Hagen in a sprint after the Norwegian had joined Trentin at the front of the race in the final three kilometres.

But Boasson Hagen’s attacking was rewarded as he extended his lead in the yellow jersey to 13 seconds ahead of Team Sky’s Wout Poels.

Doull, riding for Team Wiggins, was third to continue his remarkable form in the race with five top-ten finishes so far.

Great Britain Cycling Team’s Alex Peters was seventh on the 189km stage from Stoke-on-Trent.

Trentin, Cannondale-Garmin’s Sebastian Langeveld, Lotto-Soudal’s Jens Debusschere, LottoNL-Jumbo’s Bram Tankink and Movistar’s Gorka Izagirre had escaped early in the stage and were allowed a gap that hovered around the 60-second mark.

But with just over seven kilometres remaining they were hauled in as Team Sky applied the pressure in the chasing group.

Trentin then attacked alone before Boasson Hagen bridged across, Trentin sitting on Hagen's wheel in the final moments before passing him to claim victory.
