A world-class field including Sir Bradley Wiggins, Laura Trott and many of Great Britain’s other Olympic and Paralympic champions are set to compete at the 2015 British Cycling National Track Championships next month, British Cycling confirmed today.

The event, which takes place from 25-27 September at the National Cycling Centre in Manchester, will see Britain’s track cycling stars go head-to-head for the honour of becoming national champion at the final national track championships before the 2016 Rio Olympic Games.

In the men’s endurance events Olympic champion and 2012 Tour de France winner Sir Bradley Wiggins will compete in the men’s individual pursuit against 2014 national champion Andy Tennant, also riding for Team Wiggins. Tennant will be joined in the other men’s endurance events by Olympic champions Ed Clancy (JLT Condor) and Steven Burke as well as fellow Team Wiggins rider Owain Doull, meaning the quartet who took an impressive team pursuit silver medal at the 2015 UCI Track Cycling World Championships in Paris earlier this year will go head-to-head for individual glory.

In the women’s endurance events, Olympic champions Laura Trott (Matrix Fitness) and Joanna Rowsell Shand (Pearl Izumi Sports Tours International) will be joined by their Great Britain team pursuit teammates Elinor Barker (Wiggle Honda), Katie Archibald and Ciara Horne (both Pearl Izumi Sports Tours International) as well as multiple Paralympic champion Dame Sarah Storey.

In the men’s sprint events, Callum Skinner (The Racers) will defend the three individual sprint titles he won in 2014 but will face stiff competition from the Olympic sprint champion Jason Kenny as well as Olympic team sprint champion Phillip Hindes if he is to repeat his performance of 12 months ago.

In the women’s sprint events, British Olympian Jess Varnish (Team V-Sprint Racing) will be hoping for another flawless display as she attempts to successfully defend four titles for the second year in succession. Competition will come in the shape of in-form Katy Marchant who beat Varnish at the recent Revolution Series event in Derby, former junior world champion Dannielle Khan and 2013 double world champion Becky James, who is set to make a welcome return to the national championships as she continues her recovery from a knee injury which ruled her out of the 2014 event.

The para-cycling events will feature Paralympic champion Jody Cundy (Para T Cycling Team) and world champions Sophie Thornhill and Helen Scott (pilot) (Performance Cycle Coaching) and Neil Fachie (Black Line) with pilot Craig McLean (Nunn-Sigma Sport).

“I’ve always loved competing at the nationals. The crowd really get behind you and the atmosphere at the velodrome in Manchester is always incredible, which really lifts your performance.

“I can’t wait to get on the boards to defend my titles this year but I’m expecting some tough competition from my teammates. It’s great to see Becky James back on the track again while Katy Marchant is also in great form at the moment. 

“It’s a great feeling to stand on the top of the podium as national champion so I really hope to be up there again this year.”

Twenty-two gold medals will be awarded over six packed sessions from Friday 25 to Sunday 27 September which will see some of the world’s best track cyclists go head-to-head with the next generation of emerging British talent, all competing for the coveted red, white and blue national champions’ jerseys.
