A team of 10 Great Britain para-cyclists will travel to Nottwil in Switzerland for the 2015 UCI Para-cycling Road World Championships, which take place from 29 July to 2 August.

Dame Sarah Storey will hope to add to her astonishing tally of 20 para-cycling world titles, at the head of a team that meshes experienced and debut performers.

The event is the culmination of a long season for Great Britain’s para-cyclists, which began in 2014 with preparations for March’s track world championships in Apeldoorn before moving to the road for the UCI Para-cycling World Cup rounds in Italy and Switzerland.

For the team the event will be a major stepping stone towards the Paralympic Games in Rio, now just a year away.

The team

Karen Darke

Twelve months ago in Greenville Dame Sarah Storey increased her para-cycling world title haul to 18 across road and track, winning the C5 road race and time trial.

Storey’s 2015 season has been as successful as it has been varied. Two further world titles at the track world championships in March followed the able-bodied hour record attempt, Storey setting a new C5 record in the process.

Following Apeldoorn, Storey turned her attention to the road, riding for her trade team, foregoing the Italian and Swiss world cups before returning to the fold for Nottwil.

Lora Turnham and Corrine Hall

Lora Turnham and Corrine Hall will hope to defend the tandem road race title they won in Greenville.

Stoker Turnham was separated from Hall while the pilot recovered from long term injury, riding with Lauryn Therin through the winter track season.

A strong performance in the Yverdon-les-Bains world cup signalled their return to winning ways, where the duo won the time trial and took fourth in the road race.

Paralympic silver medallist Karen Darke adds further experience riding in the H3 class. Darke took silver in the time trial and bronze in the road race a year ago and approaches the championships on the back of a solid world cup season, the highlight a silver medal in the time trial at Yverdon-les-Bains.

The tandem duo of Steve Bate and Adam Duggleby made their world championships debut on the track in Apeldoorn earlier in the year and followed it up with an impressive road world cup debut in Italy – winning silver in the road race and bronze in the time trial.

Megan Giglia also made her world championships debut in Apeldoorn in the C3 class, just over two years after a life-changing stroke. After just missing the medals on the track, Giglia stepped up on the road in Italy, taking double bronze in the time trial and road race.

Hannah Dines

Hannah Dines gains debut worlds selection in the T2 trike class after winning silver in the time trial and bronze in the road race in Italy, her debut world-cup outing for the Great Britain squad. Read our full interview with Hannah.

Liz Saul’s worlds debut is another exciting prospect. Riding in the C4 class, Saul took time-trial and road race victory in the pre-world cup meeting at Brixia in May before a strong performance at the first world cup.

Simon Price also impressed with his progression through the season, leading to his call-up in the C2 class.

The venue

The venue for the 2015 UCI Para-cycling Road World Championships

Nottwil’s Schweizer Paraplegiker-Zentrim is the focal point for the championships, a purpose-built rehabilitation centre for people with paraplegia, in a spectacular location on the shores of Switzerland’s Sepachersee lake.

Two courses have been created, both centred on the venue and sharing elements with each other. A short seven-kilometre course will be the venue for the majority of time trial, trike and handcycling events with a longer, hillier 15.5-kilometre course used predominantly for the road races plus time trials in the men’s C3-5, men’s H3-5 and tandem categories.

From a start point at over 500 metres above sea level, the latter course tops out at over 700 metres, with a three-kilometre climb to its high point likely to be a key point in the racing.
