A new venture has been formed with Girlguiding on Anglesey, which is the start of Breeze and SheCyclesWales cycling adventures in Wales.

After the successful role out of the Breeze programme in South Wales, Welsh Cycling has recently trained Guide Leaders as Breeze Champions on Anglesey. These new Champions are now looking to lead bike rides for members of the Brownies and Girl Guides, providing great cycling opportunities to young riders. It is anticipated that the rides will also form part of a new Guiding badge in the future.

Tuesday 7 Junesaw the inaugural Breeze ride for the Guides and what a fabulous start they had, with beautiful blue skies and a gentle warm breeze!

Louise Marsden, Holyhead Guide Leader, said “We were really excited about leading our first ride, and we were hoping for a fine day and a good turnout”. They weren’t disappointed, as 5 girls aged 9 to 16, arrived at the meeting point, all ready to set off on a new adventure.

“We had a mixture of age groups and abilities, some of these girls had never cycled any great distance before, it was so rewarding to see them looking so keen! I was amazed that these girls managed to cycle 14 miles on their first ride!  There is no stopping them now and we are looking forward to arranging our next ride”. The ride was also led by Girl Guide leaders, Judy Jones, Gemma Simmonds and Kate Stock.

The ride took place on parts of Cycle Route 8, which is a route starting in Cardiff and heads up the coast, taking in spectacular scenery along the way, finally ending in Holyhead. The route has a good mixture of cycle tracks and quiet roads, so suitable for novice and young riders.

The Girl Guides all had a fabulous time and ice creams were the reward of the day!
