Great Britain’s Liam Phillips lost his UCI BMX Supercross World Cup lead after exiting in the quarter-finals at round two in Papendal on Sunday.

The 26-year-old unclipped from his pedal on the S-turn on the course at the Olympic Training Centre before being edged off the track by France’s Damien Godet.

Defending champion Phillips now sits in fourth in the overall standings on 280 points, 30 behind leader Sam Willoughby.

A tough afternoon for the Great Britain Cycling Team saw Kyle Evans also go out in the quarter-finals while in the women’s competition, Charlotte Green departed at the moto stage.

Tre Whyte did not start in Arnhem. Whyte had suffered a knee injury after crashing in practice on Saturday and it was decided that he would not be risked.

Dutch rider Niek Kimmann, junior world champion in 2014, won the men’s event as Olympic champion Mariana Pajon triumphed in the women’s event.

Kimmann’s victory was notable as the home rider started from the unfavoured lane eight.

Evans narrowly missed out in his quarter-final, crossing the line in fifth as the top four progressed.

Earlier, sixth, fifth and eighth-place finishes in the three runs left 21-year-old Green in seventh overall with the top four moving into the semi-finals.

Phillips had finished second in Saturday’s time trial and carried that form into the motos, qualifying in second with first, second and fourth-place finishes respectively in the three runs.

British champion Evans had placed first, third and fifth respectively in his three heats to go through his moto in second.

Round three of the competition takes place in Engelholm, Sweden on 15-16 August before heading to Santiago del Estero (Argentina) and Rock Hill (USA).
