Great Britain’s Liam Phillips took an excellent second place in the time trial at the UCI BMX Supercross World Cup in Papendal on Saturday.

Phillips, 26, set a time of 38.007 seconds at the Olympic Training Centre, less than one-tenth of a second slower than winner Connor Fields, who completed his lap in 37.919 seconds

Light rain had started to fall at the outdoor track in Arnhem as the final riders set their time, with Phillips - series leader - the last of 16 athletes to stop the clock.

Points towards a rider's overall ranking are not awarded for time trial results, only supercross racing.

British champion Kyle Evans was 12th in 42.825 seconds. The 21-year-old unclipped from his pedal on the start ramp, effectively ending his chances of a quick time.

Tre Whyte did not complete his lap. The 2013 world bronze medallist had crashed in practice and opted to start the lap before leaving the course to avoid any further risk of injury.

Having automatically qualified for the men's 1/8 finals via the time trial, all three Britons will now turn their focus to Sunday’s racing when they join 48 riders from qualifying.

Earlier in the qualifying motos, British champion Charlotte Green booked her place in Sunday’s women's quarter-finals with three solid runs.

Third, second and sixth-place finishes for the 20-year-old put her in 23rd overall as the top 24 went through. They will joined by the eight women's time-trial finalists.

It was another testing world cup experience for Quillan Isidore. The 18-year-old, who suffered three crashes at the opening round in Manchester, looked to have put that disappointment behind him by finishing in third-place in his first heat.

But a crash in his second heat, in which he was eighth, left Isidore needing a strong final run.

Challenging for first position in the opening corner after an excellent start, he unclipped before hurtling to the floor to end his weekend in disappointment.

Olympic champion Maraina Pajon of Colombia won the women’s time trial in 36.704 seconds.

The finals take place on Sunday with live video on the British Cycling website from 2.30pm.
