Great Britain Cycling Team’s Emily Kay survived a heavy fall to finish stage one of the 2015 Energiewacht Tour in the Netherlands on Thursday.

Following Wednesday’s opening prologue, Kay was Great Britain’s best placed rider, in 42nd place but a heavy crash on the finishing loop of the 109.2-kilometre stage from Wedde to Ter Apel looked initially to have ended Kay’s race early.

Falling to the right of the road after a crash in the middle of the pack, Kay lay on the verge for some time in obvious pain.

However the 19-year-old from Bromsgrove re-joined and chased back to finish the face in a group 32 seconds back on stage winner, Belgian champion Jolien d’Hoore.

Annie Last was Great Britain Cycling Team’s highest finisher on the day, in 29th and on the same time as d’Hoore, with fellow cross-country mountain biker Beth Crumpton in the same group in 38th along with Alice Barnes in 57th.

Emily Nelson was 93rd, finishing in the same group as Kay, who crossed the line in 98th while Manon Lloyd came home three minutes and 58 seconds back in 117th place, two places ahead of Lizzie Armitstead riding for Boels Dolmans Cycling Team, who was well placed before another rider rode into her back wheel with two kilometres to go.

The day’s action left Alice Barnes Great Britain Cycling Team’s best-placed rider on general classification in 65th place, 27 seconds back on overall race leader Anna van der Breggen of Rabo Liv Women Cycling Team.

The junior edition of the race began on Thursday with a shorter 67.7-kilometre stage from Westerwolde to Ter Apel.

Ffion James was 16th, one second behind Dutch stage winner Arianna Pruisscher. Abbie Dentus was 20th on the same time while Megan Barker finished in the same group in 46th place. Rebecca Raybould was 66th, 13 seconds down on the leading group.

Briton Grace Garner, riding for Team Giordana-Triton, was third while elder sister Lucy, riding for Liv Plantur, was ninth in the elite women’s event.

For the elites the race continues on Friday with a team time trial in De Onlanden followed by a 111.8-kilometre road stage in Westerkwartier later in the day, while the juniors face a 15.1-kilometre team time trial before Saturday’s final stage.
