Great Britain’s Laura Trott battled superbly to win a third successive omnium silver at the UCI Track Cycling World Championships on Sunday.
The 22-year-old held off the challenge of Netherlands rider Kirsten Wild in an absorbing points race to add to her silver from the team pursuit in Paris.
Australia’s Annette Edmondson took gold with 192 points, Trott ending on 176 and Wild 175 after the six disciplines that make up the event.
Olympic champion Trott has now won omnium silver in 2013, 2014 and 2015.
“I was really happy,” Trott said.
“I guess some people are going to be like 'oh, she's only got silver', because that's what I got last year.
“But I am really happy with it. After the scratch race I'd never have imagined I was even going to get a medal.”
Trott started Sunday in third having bounced back from a difficult scratch race - where she finished 13th - to win the individual pursuit and elimination race on Saturday.
Fifth in the 500m time trial and third in the flying lap put Trott into second, eight points ahead of the Wild and 14 back from Edmondson.
Wild then applied pressure to Trott in the sixth and final discipline, the points race. A victory in the sixth sprint of ten eased the burden but Trott’s position was under threat heading into the finish.
But the 2012 world champion marked the Dutch rider’s wheel and crossed the line behind her to ensure her a silver medal by a single point.
“There's stuff to work on.” Trott added. “The 500m (time trial) also let me down. That's normally one of my strongest events.
“I'm certainly happy with my form. The IP (individual pursuit) proved that it was in there, it was just a few tactical errors meant I was way down on the points.”
In the women’s keirin, Jess Varnish could not find her form from the sprint as she exited in the first round.
The 24-year-old was fourth in her heat as the top two riders progressed. Forced into the repechage, Varnish was second with only one rider going through to round two.
Owain Doull, part of Britain’s team pursuit squad that won silver, teamed up with Mark Christian in the Madison.
They made a strong start and took a lap on the field to lead the contest.
But with less than 45 laps of the 200 remaining, the duo lost their lap and with two points on the board dropped to sixth.
The loss of another lap saw them fall to ninth by the conclusion of the race, which was won by France’s Bryan Coquard and Morgan Kneisky. Italy were second and Belgium third.
The men's sprint was won by France's Gregory Bauge while Australian Anna Meares won the women's keirin.
The Great Britain Cycling Team finish the five-day championships 10th in the medal table with three silver medals.
