As the Great Britain Cycling Team heads to the track world championships in Paris, 15 of the 19 riders battling for honours will have progressed from British Cycling’s Go-Ride youth development programme in the various cycling disciplines.

There are currently over 300 Go-Ride Clubs around the country delivering coaching and racing activities for young people each week. The clubs provide a friendly and safe environment for young riders, offering them an opportunity to get their first taste of cycle sport. Go-Ride is the first step onto the British Cycling Performance Pathway; the success of which can clearly be seen by the riders in great Britain kit competing this month.

In particular, Go-Ride graduate and Go-Ride Ambassador, Jason Kenny, has seen success at the world championships twice before claiming rainbow jerseys in the sprint (2011) and keirin (2013). Jason was talent spotted whilst he was at Eastlands Velo Go-Ride Club. Laura Trott, who started out at Welwyn Wheelers Go-Ride Club, has five world titles to her name.

Trott is also an ambassador for the Go-Ride programme and said:

“Without support from the volunteers at my Go-Ride Club, it’s possible I wouldn’t be where I am today. They’re all doing a fantastic job and are making a real difference to the sport!”

The inspiration provided by the success of these elite athletes will undoubtedly motivate young people to have a go at emulating their cycling heroes and Go-Ride Clubs are ready and waiting to welcome new youngsters to the sport. You can find your nearest Go-Ride Club here.
