The next generation of cycling stars are getting set to gear up for the Welsh Schools Circuit Race Championships on Sunday.

More than 100 entries from schools all over south Wales are expected at the Championship, taking place at Llandow Motor Racing Circuit, Vale of Glamorgan. Racing sets in motion at midday with the under seven age group.

Supporting senior races will run from 9.30am, held by Cardiff JIF cycling club. Races will include a fourth cat, third cat and 2/3/4 Races

The event is also helping to raise money for the Marie Curie Cancer Care Hospice and day centre in Penarth.

Medals and certificates will be awarded to all school competitors, with special trophies for the fastest male and female champions in each age group. Racing is expected to be fiercely contested, as the youngsters will also compete for their school within each age group category, in teams made up of girls and boys.

Sign-on for the Schools Championship will open from 11am and close 15 minutes before the start of each age group race.

A full programme will be available to school entrants soon.

A café may be open on site but all competitors are encouraged to bring their own supplies and plenty of layers. Weather is expected to be fair, but the pan-flat circuit is well known for its strong headwinds.

The Championship is accredited by the British Schools Cycling Association (BSCA), a body recognised by British Cycling that each year helps dozens of youngsters up to the age of 19 in full-time education find a pathway into the sport.

Schools are reminded that gear restrictions for racing are:

  • 5.10 metres for Under 7s - School year 2 and below
  • 5.40 metres for Under 9s - School years 3 & 4
  • 6.05 metres for the Under 11s - School years 5 & 6
