Milan - San Remo Race Guide | Team Sky
Geraint Thomas will begin the prestigious Milan - San Remo this weekend, as part of 8-strong Team Sky line up.
Milan-San Remo has not been particularly kind to Team Sky as yet, and Juan Antonio Flecha's 15th place in 2010 remains the best result to date. This year's Classics group are in the best condition yet however following a new focus on the spring one-day races, and Edvald Boasson Hagen as well as Wales' Geraint Thomas will be hoping to be among the front-runners this time around.
Also referred to as 'la classica di Primavera' (the Classic of the Spring) or simply 'La Primavera', Milan-San Remo is the first of cycling's five annual Monument Classics. Some of the sport's most famous names have secured victory in the race over the 106 years since its inception, with Eddy Merckx holding the record after claiming a total of seven wins in the 1960s and 70s. At 298 kilometres it is the longest one-day race on the calendar, and also one of the most open, with sprinters, 'rouleurs' and punchy climbers all having a chance of crossing the line first.
Team Sky's Classics riders have spent the last 12 days working hard at an altitude training camp in Tenerife to give themselves the best possible chance of success in the upcoming one-day races - starting with Milan-San Remo on Sunday 17 March.
