2011 British Girls Under 13s Individual Cycle Speedway Championship

East Newport CSC 11th June 2011

Just prior to the match the East Newport track witnessed thunder, lightning and a downpour but nothing was going to stop the home club putting on a top match for this inaugural Under 13s Girls event. The sport of cycle speedway has taken big strides in providing racing opportunities for all and this match was seen as a tester to see if the strategy was working and judging b the quality of racing cycle speedway has a good future. Girls from all over the country came together to pit their skills against each other and the sport's top club, Wednesfield, provided two favourites in Sharna Cox and Courtney Aris. With the first three races gone Cox and Aris had both won their battles and were brought together in heat 5 along with East Newport's Jamielea Walters who had won her first outing against the two Sheffield girls Billie Owen and Amber Webster. Heat 5 was the battle of the big guns and all three riders lined up with Walters on grid 1, Cox on grid 2 and Aris on grid 3. Walters made the gate and all three girls bunched up going into the first turn but it was Walters who kept her cool and powered in well and picked up her pedals early to exit in first place. Aris was in hot pursuit though and after 2 laps ad caught the Welsh girl going into the first turn on lap 3. Once again Walters stayed strong and was not put off by the challenge which resulted in Aris taking a fall.

The crowd waited to see if the referee was going to stop the race but thankfully Aris remounted and rejoined the race. By now Jamielea Walters was a good half lap in front and took the race win. Walters third race was on the outside of the Jess Drane of Poole but another show of strength saw Walters round Drane on the first turn to take her third chequered flag. Courtney Aris and Sharna Cox both completed their matches in winning style leaving a final race off between the two girls from East Newport. With Jamielea on gate 2 and Sophie Thomas who looked far older than her real age of 8 years old on gate 3 it was all down to who would hold their nerve. The tapes flew up and both girls raced off the gate.

Walters sheer power gave her the advantage and she pulled away to take her fourth race win and a perfect maximum score to take the title in great style. The home supporters erupted with delight for both of their girls as the Welsh club enjoyed its newest British Champion and Sophie coming fourth overall in a field where she was four year younger than the next girl. This event has a future and deserves to be staged in great fashion. Congratulations to Jamielea who spent the rest of the afternoon with such a huge smile on her face and well done to all the girls who made the match very memorable.

2011 British Boys Under 13s Individual Cycle Speedway Championship

East Newport CSC 11th June 2011

The final was always going to be an open affair and once again this match went right to last race. The compact East Newport circuit always provides great racing moments and nail biting incidents and today was no exception to the rule. With the track looking resplendent decked out in bunting and racing surface the best it has ever been thanks to the hard working club members the scene was set for a great final. The first shock of the day was in heat 3 with Stockport 2006 rider heading home Astley and Tyldesleys Adam Phillips. Will Tidball of Exeter kept winning races and looked very much at home with his smooth cornering and show of power down the straights kept him in contention all the way through the meeting. The East Newport trio of riders kept the crowd alive with their great passing skills and determination. Adam Bennett looked at ease even though he was nursing a displaced knuckle and who knows what he may have achieved had he been fully fit?

The final four races dished up the best racing of the day with all riders knowing what they needed to make it to the podium. Matt Turner enjoyed his third win of the day to finish on 17 points. The final race of the day saw Adam Phillips take his gate 2 against the diminutive Will Tidball who got himself ready on gate 4. The tapes shot up releasing the four riders and it was Adam Phillips who turned on the power to shoot away and take the win without any drama. Tidball however had a real battle on his hands. A second place would give him second overall and try as he may he just could not find the position to secure the runner up spot with pass after pass seeing him on the outside of the Leicester rider Liam Davies who held on for the second spot in the race. While Phillips basked in his winning glory Tidball and Turner was put through a run off situation for second and third overall. Tidball won the toss and elected to take grid 2. The race started with Tidball holding his gate and defending off a strong challenge from the Stockport rider. After four laps of chasing the rider from Devon celebrated a great win and the silver medal much to the supporter's pleasure. Referee, Colin Simmons put on a great display from the centre green and kept the racing flowing. All riders were presented with cups sponsored by Trident Health Safety and Environmental and supplied by Dash Trophies. Overall a great day for riders and spectators and with so many young riders putting on such a great show the sport enjoyed one of its finest moments. The weather held off for the day allowing the hard work put in by the East Newport club to be fully appreciated and special thanks most go all who worked so hard to make this day stand out.
