It's official - Britain holds some of the worlds best opportunities to go mountain biking - proving you don't need the Alps or Rockies to have fun off road. That has been the overwhelming conclusion by the International Mountain Bike Association (IMBA) when inspecting the opportunities to ride in the UK, and the way those opportunities respect the environment.

Following millions of pounds of investment into cycling from sources as diverse as European Union grants and local government funding, trailcentres especially have proven their worth as vehicles for local regeneration in rural, post-industrial landscapes. This is a scenario especially true in southern Wales and southern Scotland where projects like 7stanes are moving toward self sufficiency, creating local business and event opportunities.

Playing a central role in community regeneration, mountain biking is now increasingly being promoted as a part of young offenders' rehabilitation, as well as being introduced in schools which are local to mountain bike facilities forming part of government policy toward exercise and healthy living.
