This Sunday 14th June, the Scottish Cycling National Criterium & Youth Road Race Championships will take place in the heart of Stirling as part of the Crit Under The Castle event. Crit Under The Castle is a closed road cycle racing extravaganza around Stirling Town Centre.
Over 315 of Scotland’s best riders will take to the streets of Stirling to compete for the chance to become Scottish National Champion. The fast paced 1.18 mile circuit incorporates cobbled climbs and fast descents that will put both the Senior and Youth riders to the test.
In the Senior men’s Criterium race, the recently crowned Scottish Cycling National Road Race champion from Glasgow, Steven Lawley (Neon-Velo Cycling Team) will be looking to defend his Criterium Champion title.
2014’s Senior women’s Champion Kayleigh Brogan will not be racing on Sunday so the title is all to play for. Favourites to take the top spot include Edinburgh’s Louise Borthwick (Project 51), Louise’s Project 51 team mate Flora Gillies from Peebles, Aberdeenshire’s Ashleigh Fraser (Deeside Thistle CC) and, after a stellar performance at the Squirrel Criterium race in Fife last week, Junior rider Erika Allen (Team Thompsons Cycles).
The Youth races promise to be very exciting with over 150 rider’s taking part throughout the course of the day. Local Stirling rider Rhona Callendar, who has been dominating the ScottishPower Youth Series, will be defending her title. Fife cyclist Joseph Nally will also be looking to become National Champion for the second year running.
Craig Burn, Scottish Cycling’s Chief Executive said: “Scottish Cycling are delighted that the Scottish Cycling National Championships are taking place in Stirling, with a spectacular finish at Stirling Castle. This is a chance for the best riders throughout the country to come together and compete for a coveted National Championship title on one of our many great courses we have here in Scotland.”
“Scottish Cycling would like to thank organiser Norrie Petrie, Stirling Bike Club and Stirling Council for hosting the event as well as all the volunteers, officials and riders who make events like this possible.”
The Crit Under The Castle race HQ will be at the Albert Hall in Stirling with racing beginning at 12.30. Spectators are encouraged to come along on Sunday to cheer on our riders competing. For more information on Crit Under the Castle please visit: www.castle.stirlingbikeclub.org.uk
