It was the perfect weather for the spectators on Sunday at the Anderside Classic Road Race in Strathaven – but a brutal heat for the 51 riders who took to the start line to tackle the 6000ft of climbing on the hilly route.

The race, which incorporated Round 3 of Scottish Cyclings National Series – the ‘Alba’ Series, as well as the West Regional Road Race Series and a 3rd Cat race, was organised by V.C. Astar.

A group of five riders attempted a break away soon after the neutralized start but were pulled back into the peloton after only twenty minutes – despite their ten second lead.

Finally a lead group was established, with Harry Tanfield and Steven Lawley taking the leading positions – fracturing the remaining group in their efforts to catch them down.

The tough climbs took their toll and Fraser Martin from Raleigh GAC was dropped on Byres Hill – the shortest but steepest hill on the course – pushing teammates Evan Oliphant and Craig Wallace to chase the leaders down.

By the end only two riders remained for the finish sprint – Harry Tanfield from Pedal Heaven and Steven Lawley from Metaltek Kuota Racing Team. After a 50 meter battle, Harry took the top spot on the podium with Steven not far behind.

Harry made every move of the day, not only taking 1st place, but also winning the Gala Day Sprint shield.

Raleigh rider, and Scottish National Road Race Champion, Evan Oliphant came across the line in 3rd place, with series leader David Lines taking 4th.

The winners of the West Regional Road Race were Scott McCrossan, East Kilbride Road Club, Aidan Quinn, www.Dooleys-Cycles.co.uk and Andy Brown of Glasgow Cycle Team.

Finally, the 3rd cat riders on the podium were Keith Greenwood, Pedal Power RT, David Dalziel, Glasgow Nightingale CC and and Gary Davidson, East Kilbride Road Club, 1st, 2nd and 3rd respectively.

The next round of the Alba Series will be Tour of the Glens on 24th July.
