Another packed few days of action for our #NationOfCyclists as Scotland’s best track riders head down to Newport for the 2022 UK Track Championships, while the Scottish BMX, road and time trial seasons got underway, and there was a plethora of Scots in road action abroad.
2022 UK Track Champs
It’s been a magnificent week in Newport with Fin Graham and Jack Carlin both winning three titles each, both having the Midas’ touch as every event they touched turned to gold. Sprinter Ellie Stone produced two stunning rides to claim gold in the Keirin and 500m TT, while also claiming bronze in the Team Sprint for Scotland. While Neah Evans replicated that record winning gold in the Women’s Individual pursuit and Points Race before finishing third in the Scratch Race.
There was also medals for Ali Fielding, John Archibald, Lusia Steele, Lauren Bell, Iona Moir, Jenny Holl, Kate Richardson, Jonny Wale and Kyle Gordon.
EasyToys Bloeizone Fryslân Tour
Katie Archibald claimed a fourth place in the overall general classification at the race formerly known as the Healthy Living Tour in the Netherlands.
The Scot was 50 seconds behind winner Ellen van Dijk and claimed a fourth place on the opening time trial stage.
Scottish road race champion Becky Storrie (CAMS-Basso) finished 16th on Stage 1 before finishing in 96th in the overall classification, while teammate Beth Morrow came home in 91st place.
Knockhill Mountain Time Trial
Dunfermline CC hosted the Knockhill Mountain TT on Sunday, with the twisty and mountainous course providing riders with a tough challenge over the 25-mile course.
Logan Maclean (Wheelbase-CabTech Castelli) was victorious with a time of 55:35, with Robbie Mitchell (Auchencrow Thistle) in second (58:15) and Richard Sanderson (Kinross CC) just over the hour mark (60:13) in third. Maclean’s time was significantly quicker than the winning time in the last edition in 2019 which was just over 59 minutes.
Despite being on a road bike, Arianne Holland (Alba Development RT) won out in the Women’s field with a time of 69:31, Rachel Payne (Kinross CC) finished six minutes back in second (75:57), while clubmate Miriam Rennet finished third in 77:32.
Up the Glax
Spokes RT hosted a mini-stage race in Alford on Saturday with a morning Prologue Hill Climb up Suie Road before an 80km Road Race using the Glax course in the afternoon.
Ciaran McSherry (The Cycling Academy) topped the General Classification from Murray Lawson (Spokes RT) and Elijah Kwon (The Cycling Academy) in third.
Despite winning the road stage Lawson lost out to McSherry who bettered him in the Stage 1 TT to claim the General Classification by 16 seconds, with Kwon a further 12 seconds back
Scots Abroad
Sean Flynn (Swiss Racing Academy) had two great rides in a pair of Croatian UCI 1.2 races over the past few days. A strong 37th in the Umag Trophy was followed up with an excellent 5th place in the Porec Trophy yesterday, even more remarkable given that Flynn was caught up in a crash with 15km to go.
Alfie George (Vendeé U23) and Morgan Bown (Saint Etienne) were racing the Vienne Classic which was the second round of the Coupe de France – the French version of the Premier Calendar. Bown’s aggressive racing saw him make the first selection and finish eighth, with George coming home 32 seconds down in 63rd – a very respectable ride in his first event in the series.
