Great Britain sprinter John Paul finished second at the Six Days of Bremen after a tense final evening.

Victory in the keirin was not enough for the British Cycling Olympic Academy Programme rider who ended the event a solitary point away from German Sebastian Döhrer in the overall standings

Compatriots Callum Skinner and Lewis Oliva concluded the competition in fifth and sixth respectively.

With no team sprint on Tuesday night, the winner would be decided from three events as 2011 junior world sprint champion Paul and Döhrer were tied level with the former having led the event for most of its duration before Döhrer has fought back on Monday.

Third for Paul in the opening one-lap sprint time-trial with Döhrer second left the 19-year-old Scot with a one point deficit before a keirin win ahead of Callum Skinner put Paul back on top of the standings as Döhrer settled for third.

But in the deciding major sprint final Döhrer responded with the win and with Paul finishing third the title would go to the German at the Breman Arena. British sprint champion Skinner managed fifth place in the minor final and Oliva sixth as the 49th edition of the event came to a close.
