Thunder Drome & Scottish Track Champs

Scottish Cycling, the national governing body for cycling in Scotland is delighted to announce that the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome, which forms part of the £113million Commonwealth Arena, will play host to the very first competitive event taking place in the new facility; the Scottish Track Championships. Throughout 3 days of competition, taking place on 26th – 28th October 2012, riders will have the chance to compete for 14 championship titles! The championships are the traditional competitive event and offer new fans a great way to get acquainted with the sport.

To celebrate the opening of this fantastic facility, Scottish Cycling will also be incorporating a one off charity event in partnership with the Braveheart Fund and Glasgow Life in honour of Sir Chris Hoy, six times Olympic gold medallist, called the THUNDER DROME in the velodrome named in his honour! With a special appearance from Sir Chris Hoy and other Scottish, English and European track cycling stars!

The THUNDER DROME, taking place from 1 -3pm on the 27th October 2012, is an exciting 2 hour exhibition event which will showcase events as seen in the Olympics such as the Keirin, Match Sprint and Team Sprints. This unique one off event will create once in a life time opportunity for spectators to interact with Sir Chris and other cycling stars throughout the event!

4 teams of 3 sprinters from Team Braveheart, Scotland, England and Europe will go head to head in the THUNDERDROME. The THUNDERDROME will bring the velodrome to life for all the family!

Craig Burn, Chief Executive of Scottish Cycling, the national governing body for cycling in Scotland said: “It’s fantastic that the Scottish Track Championships will be the first competitive event in the Sir Chris Hoy velodrome. Scottish Cycling is committed to developing the sport at every level and we are delighted that we are able to incorporate the THUNDERDROME into the weekend and support the Braveheart fund.”

“The facility itself is a superb legacy for Scotland and will aid the development of the next generation of elite Scottish athletes like Sir Chris Hoy himself. We are hoping we might even see the stars of the future begin their winning careers at the first championship event held at the new Velodrome in October.”

Alan Miller, Founding partner of the Braveheart Fund said: “The Braveheart Fund was launched in 2003 by former British champion, Motorola professional and Giro d’Italia survivor Brian Smith and I. Our aim was simple: to raise funds to allow young Scottish cyclists, be they roadies, trackies or mountain bikers, to fulfil their potential. We are pleased that we are working in partnership with Scottish Cycling and Glasgow Life to put on this showcase event to celebrate the opening of the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome and celebrate the great career of Braveheart patron, Sir Chris Hoy.”

Individual tickets can be purchased for each day; however as a first event special you can get a FULL WEEKEND ticket for the same price as a Saturday ticket! Ticket prices range from £3 - £5 for the Scottish Track Championship and from £15 - £20 for the THUNDERDROME.

Scottish Cycling and Braveheart are pleased to announce that tickets for the Scottish Track Championships and Thunder Drome Event will go on sale to Scottish Cycling and Braveheart members on Wednesday 29^th August 2012 at 9am – Please see your membership newsletter!

The Scottish Track Championships is a 3 day event taking place from 26th – 28^th October 2012 at the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome and will see riders from across Scotland compete for 14 championship titles.

On Saturday 27^th October, during the Scottish Track Championships, we will be hosting an exciting 2 hour exhibition called The THUNDER DROME. This is a one off event in honour of Sir Chris Hoy, 6 times Olympic gold medallist.
