In case you somehow missed it, Christmas is coming up very soon – in fact it’s only two days away now.
So we asked some members of the Scottish Cycling elite riders how they will spend Christmas day and Hogmanay.
We asked Track Sprinter Ellie Stone, Endurance Track and Road rider Kyle Gordon as well as Cyclocross and XC Mountain Bike rider Rory McGuire to gain an insight in how elite athletes in different disciplines plan to spend the festive period.
First up, where are you planning to spend the festive period?
Ellie: “I will be heading back to spend Christmas and Hogmanay with the family back up north in Aviemore.”
Rory: “My parents and brother are coming over to Belgium for Christmas, so we’ll spend a few days out here as I’m in a block of cyclocross racing at the moment.”
Kyle: “I will head back up north and spend Christmas with the family, as I’ve only just got back from racing in Switzerland.”
How will you spend Christmas Day, and will you train at all?
Ellie: “I won’t be training on Christmas day, but we will have a Vegetarian Christmas Dinner, which is always nice.”
Rory: “I’m racing the Boxing Day World Cup in Dedermonde, which I’m looking forward to, so I’ll be doing my usual pre-race ride of about 1.5 hours with some short efforts. Christmas Dinner will probably just be pasta for me - nothing too fancy as I’m racing the following day.”
Kyle: “Aye, I’ll go for a training ride early on, probably for about 3 hours, before heading back home to chill out with the family and exchanging the presents and such.”
How will you spend Hogmanay?
Ellie: “I’ll definitely train then as I am currently in a training block building towards the British Champs in Newport.”
Rory: “Again, I’m racing on New Year's Day, so won’t be having any crazy plans for Hogmanay unfortunately, but hey ho! It’s been a bit different this December and January but I’ve really enjoyed it and can’t wait for the next race!”
Kyle: “Trying to behave!”
So there you have it – each of our athletes taking a different approach to the festive period, depending on where they're at in their season. One thing’s for certain though – we certainly won’t be having pasta like Rory on the big day!
To each and every one of our Scottish Cycling community – we wish you a happy and healthy festive season.
