Phoebe Gale delivered the performance of the weekend from the Scots at the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup in France, the 16-year-old dominating proceedings in the Junior Women’s Downhill event.
After topping qualifying, a virtually flawless run saw Gale take the win in the final by two full seconds, in only her second ever World Cup event. In contention throughout, it was the final section of the course that saw borders girl pull away from her rivals and top the leaderboard.
Bethany McCully also impressed in the same event with a ninth place finish, whilst in the Junior Men’s race, Stirlingshire’s Ryan Brannen finished in a very respectable 17th with William Brodie 21st. Unfortunately, Highland’s Douglas Goodwill was red flagged in qualifying and just missed out on making the final.
In the Elite Women’s race, Mikayla Parton suffered a nasty crash in practice, which forced her to sit out the practice sessions as a result. Despite this, she only narrowly missed on the final, finishing in 18th place.
Weather conditions deteriorated for the Men’s Elite event, with the constant rain wreaking havoc with the riders, who faced the dilemma of choosing to be cautious and stay upright at the expense of time, or take big risks. This showed for Reece Wilson who suffered a spectacular crash during his final run that led to his eventual 58th place finish - fortunately no bones were broken. Highland’s Greg Williamson rode to a respectable 32nd place finish, whilst Jamie Edmondson narrowly missed out on the final after a cautious ride in qualifying.
Sunday saw the XC riders take centre stage in the shadow of Mont Blanc, Isla Short (Orbea Factory Team) equalling her best World Cup finish with 11th in the Elite Women’s contest on an unbelievably muddy track. Short also recorded a lap time in the top five overall in the tough conditions which remained from the day previous.
Charlie Aldridge followed up his 24th at La Thuile in Italy last weekend with a strong 10th place finish in the Men’s Under 23 event, his compatriot Rory McGuire coming home in 33rd – a classy race having started way back in 78th on the grid. Anna Flynn and Anna McGorum finished 36th and 48th respectively in the Under 23 Women and it was great to see these four young riders donning the Scottish Cycling colours in a World Cup event.
