Start Club Riding is an exciting programme developed by Scottish Cycling to help increase the number of people participating in regular club activity across Scotland. Primarily this fund is focused on introducing people to the club environment for the first time, additionally further funding can be received to promote inclusion and diversity within clubs. We recognise that much of our membership comes from a narrow demographic and we are passionate about helping clubs reflect the communities that they serve.

Our cycling community misses out when people feel it isn’t for them, or if they stop cycling due to the barriers they face. We’re committed to removing those barriers and creating an environment of Cycling for All.

The aim of the programme is to provide financial and organisational support to clubs looking to increase and diversify their ride leaders and create an inclusive environment that promotes cycling for all. This will be achieved through; targeted membership growth by exploring ‘creating inclusive environments’ and further facilitated by providing financial support to train volunteers to take on Level 1 Ride or Level 1 MTB Leadership qualifications.

Clubs can apply to this programme to secure funding to increase the number of qualified ride leaders within their club. The intention of this, is to provide additional capacity within clubs to welcome new members who wouldn’t otherwise participate in club activity.

Additionally, Scottish Cycling has identified three key groups which are currently significantly under-represented within the community, and would welcome applications from clubs which can demonstrate their commitment to increasing the number of individuals from these communities both delivering and participating in cycling activity. These three groups are:

  • Women

  • Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic

  • People from low income households

The core element of this project focuses on increasing the number of individuals completing the following courses: Level 1 Ride Leadership Award  and Level 1 Mountain Bike Leadership Award.

Clubs can apply for funding for up to three individuals to complete the above courses. However, if your club signals its intention to focus on increasing participation from the above three groups, we recognise that additional support will be required to ensure that your club can truly diversify your membership.

Additional project expenditure in this instance, can be included within your application, and an outline of what is considered as eligible expenditure is included within the application guidance notes.

The programme will be supplemented by a series of webinar sessions led by the Club Development Team, focusing on: developing your project, understanding the needs of participants and volunteers, and how to reach your intended audiences.
